Creating An Environment

This film is a process focused look at Winterthur’s exhibition development for Almost Unknown: The Afric-American Picture Gallery. Created as part of the exhibition itself, the film invites visitors into the behind-the-scenes world of exhibitions. Its purpose is to reveal the many components involved in building an immersive, storytelling experience, and to highlight the collaboration between all parties that bring an exhibition to life.

To orient viewers within the exhibition’s development timeline, the film is structured in narrative sections.

This opening chapter introduces the conceptual stage of the exhibition. Its goal was to digest the core themes, ideas, and key voices behind Almost Unknown, distilling the exhibition’s core themes and introducing the key voices behind its creation. It sets the tone for the film and highlights the collaborative vision that propels the project forward.

This next chapter shows how the initial concept is actualized. It highlights the visual planning, spatial thinking, and creative decisions that shape how the story is brought to life in a physical space.

This chapter focuses on how the physical exhibition space comes to life over time. It outlines the key stages of construction and explores how the designed environment is built, assembled, and refined into a fully realized experience.
